How to Choose a Portable Baptistry for Your Church
Choosing a church baptistry starts with a few practical questions: Will the baptistry remain in the sanctuary or move between locations? Does the church want a finished furniture-style cabinet or a frame that can be used as-is or finished locally? Is a heater needed? Would a standard-length or extra-long model better serve the people being baptized?
Since 1979, Southeast Church Supply has helped churches select baptistries, heaters and related equipment. This guide brings together practical information developed from those years of serving churches and explains the main choices before ordering.
Use the guide below to compare compact, standard, extra-long and extra-large portable baptistry styles and models. For current products, pricing and options, visit the Portable Baptistries category.

How to Choose a Portable Baptistry for Your Church
A portable baptistry can serve churches without space for a permanent baptismal pool, congregations meeting in multipurpose facilities, and churches that want a baptistry that can be moved or stored. The best choice depends on how the baptistry will be used, where it will be located, the desired exterior appearance, water-heating needs and the amount of room wanted inside the tank.

Finished Cabinet or Wooden Frame?
A finished oak-cabinet baptistry provides a furniture-style exterior suitable for churches that plan to leave the unit visible in a sanctuary or worship area. The FUN-6PKG and FUN-6PKG-XL combine the fiberglass tank with an oak cabinet and package equipment. FUN-6PB provides the oak-cabinet format while letting the church select operating options separately.
A wooden-frame model provides a self-supporting structure around the fiberglass tank. FUN-6KFR and FUN-6KFR-XL can be used as-is or finished with plywood, skirting, a banner or another exterior treatment. ASB-7030 offers a compact 70 in. frame design, while ASB-9533X offers a larger 7 ft. 11 in. frame design with a dry-minister arrangement. A wooden frame is a practical starting point for churches planning to finish the exterior locally.
Standard Length or Extra Long?
The FUN standard models measure 6 ft. 4 in. long and hold approximately 100 gallons. Extra-long FUN models measure 7 ft. 3 in. long and hold approximately 125 gallons. The ASB-7030 is 70 in. long and holds approximately 100 gallons. The ASB-9533X is 7 ft. 11 in. long and holds approximately 125–150 gallons. The ASB-9533WC wood-cabinet model is approximately 8 ft. 1-3/4 in. long and holds approximately 125 gallons. Extra length can provide additional room for the person being baptized and the minister's chosen method of assisting. Before ordering, compare the available floor area, doorway and movement path with the measurements shown on the individual product page.
Do You Need a Baptistry Heater?
A heater becomes important when tap-water temperature will not provide comfortable baptismal water. Heater choice depends on baptistry size, electrical service, frequency of use and whether water remains in the pool between baptisms.
For portable baptistries, 120V immersion or circulation systems can be practical depending on the model. Larger built-in baptismal pools commonly use 240V equipment. Heating time varies with water volume, starting water temperature, room temperature, heater output and heat loss.
For detailed heater selection, see Baptistry Heaters and the Baptistry Water Heating Guide.
Immersion Heater or Circulation Heater?
An immersion heater requires little plumbing and can make sense for occasional baptisms, smaller pools or installations where cutting plumbing openings into the tank is undesirable. Water may need occasional mixing because an immersion heater does not circulate the pool water.
A circulation heater pumps water through the heating system, helping distribute heat throughout the pool. This style generally makes more sense for frequent use, larger baptismal pools or installations where circulation is desirable. Electrical equipment used around baptistry water must follow the heater manufacturer's instructions and applicable GFCI and electrical requirements.
Should a Church Leave Water in the Baptistry?
Keeping a baptistry filled changes the buying decision. Standing water creates additional concerns involving access and safety, sanitation, humidity, water treatment and the baptistry manufacturer's care requirements. Churches planning to keep water in a pool for extended periods should consider circulation, filtration or sanitation needs before selecting equipment.
For detailed guidance, see Baptistry Care & Use and Baptistry Water Care. Manufacturer instructions for the baptistry and heating equipment should take precedence when care requirements differ.
How Long Does a Portable Baptistry Take to Fill, Heat and Drain?
Several FUN portable models hold approximately 100 to 125 gallons. Published model information generally lists fill times of about 15 to 25 minutes with a garden hose and drain times of about 30 to 45 minutes through the installed drain and a garden hose. Heating time depends heavily on starting water temperature, room temperature and heater type. Check the individual product page for the operating information associated with the selected model.
Which Portable Baptistry Is Best for a Small Church?
There is no single model that serves every small church. FS-EZP offers a compact fiberglass design with steps. ASB-7030 is a compact 70 in. wooden-frame option. FUN-6KFR is another frame choice for churches planning to finish the exterior locally. When the baptistry will remain visible in the sanctuary, compare the finished-cabinet models instead. Floor space, tank access, heater and mobility requirements should guide the decision more than church membership alone.
Which Model Works Best as Sanctuary Furniture?
Finished-cabinet models deserve first consideration when the baptistry will remain visible in the sanctuary. FUN-6PKG provides a standard-length oak-cabinet package with heater and wheels, FUN-6PKG-XL provides the extra-long version, and FUN-6PB provides an oak cabinet with major upgrades selected separately. ASB-9533WC is another option, with an extra-large birch-wood cabinet, matching steps and heavy-duty wheels included. Compare included equipment, exterior finish, floor space and delivered cost before selecting a model.
Which Model Gives the Church the Most Freedom to Finish the Exterior?
FUN-6KFR and FUN-6KFR-XL provide wooden support frames around the fiberglass tank. The frames can remain visible for functional use or serve as a base for plywood, skirting, banners or other exterior treatment. ASB-7030 offers a smaller 70 in. frame option, while ASB-9533X provides a 7 ft. 11 in. extra-large frame with a dry-minister arrangement. Choose according to the room available, intended baptism method, desired tank length and planned exterior treatment.
Which Portable Baptistry Offers More Room for Larger Candidates?
The ASB-9533X is a 7 ft. 11 in. long, extra-large wooden-frame model with a dry-minister design and approximately 125–150 gallon capacity. It deserves particular attention when additional room is important and the minister will remain outside the tank. The ASB-9533WC provides a larger finished-cabinet alternative with matching steps and wheels. The FUN-6PKG-XL and FUN-6KFR-XL are 7 ft. 3 in. alternatives. Tank shape, seat position, access steps and the person being baptized matter alongside overall length; compare the actual model drawings before ordering.
Which ASB-9533 Model Should a Church Choose?
The model numbers represent distinct purchasing choices. ASB-9533X is an extra-large fiberglass tank with a wooden support frame and optional exterior finishing. ASB-9533WC is a large finished birch-wood cabinet package with top, matching steps and heavy-duty wheels. The WC package includes more exterior furniture components, while the X frame model offers greater freedom to complete the exterior locally. Heater and other selected options should be checked on each product page.
What Should Be Checked Before Ordering a Portable Baptistry?
- Measure the intended baptistry location and the route used to move the unit into the building.
- Decide whether the baptistry will remain visible or be stored between uses.
- Compare standard and extra-long tank lengths.
- Determine whether wheels, steps, handrails or a finished cabinet should be included.
- Confirm the electrical service required by the selected heater.
- Consider where the baptistry will be filled and where the water will be drained.
- Review freight charges and delivery requirements for the selected model.
- Review manufacturer safety, care and operating instructions before use.
Planning a Built-In Church Baptistry
A portable unit is not the best solution for every church. New construction and major sanctuary renovations may favor a permanently installed fiberglass baptismal pool. Built-in models provide additional choices such as single-entry, double-entry, dry-minister and larger group configurations.
For permanent installations, see Church Baptistries and the Church Baptistry Installation Guide.
Portable Baptistry Buying Guide Summary
Start with the way the church plans to use the baptistry. Compare compact choices such as FS-EZP and ASB-7030, finished oak or birch cabinet models, and wooden-frame designs that can be finished locally. FUN extra-long models and the larger ASB-9533X / ASB-9533WC models serve churches wanting additional length or interior room. Then select heating, mobility and accessory options according to frequency of use, electrical service, access needs and the church's operating routine.
