Alloying metals are added to gold to increase the durability of the ring.
The karat number represents the amount of gold as a percentage:

24 karat gold is made of 100 percent gold (too soft for use as a ring)
18 karat gold rings are 18/24's gold or 75 percent gold (best for everday wear)
14 karat gold rings are 14/24's gold or 58 percent gold.(least expensive and therefore most popular for everyday wear)
24k gold plated sterling silver (for ceremonial use only, not for every day wear because the gold plating can get scratched and wear off)
Sterling silver and silver oxidised (good for every day wear)

Abrasion, makeup, and perspiration can cause corrosion/discoloration of gold rings, especially in warm and moist air environments.
