Alloying metals are added to gold to increase the durability of the ring.

The karat number represents the amount of gold as a percentage:
  • 24 karat gold is made of 100 percent gold (too soft for use as a ring)
  • 18 karat gold rings are 18/24's gold or 75 percent gold (best for everday wear)
  • 14 karat gold rings are 14/24's gold or 58 percent gold.(least expensive and therefore most popular for everyday wear)
  • 24k gold plated sterling silver (for ceremonial use only, not for every day wear because the gold plating can get scratched and wear off)
  • Sterling silver and silver oxidised (good for every day wear)
Abrasion, makeup, and perspiration can cause corrosion/discoloration of gold rings, especially in warm and moist air environments.

Perspiration and other contaminants can react with the non-gold elements of a ring to discolor some individual's skin.

Non-precious stones or simulated gemstones are use in bishop's rimgs. Real gem stone quality stones avilable on request (prices vary)
