So what is the correct name for one of those things in a church used to baptize folks?

We hear it all, from baptism pool to bap-tis-tery. Some people call them baptismals, others use the terms baptismal pool, church pool, baptistry, baptizing pool...

We in the industry typically refer to them as baptistries or as a baptistry. But the dictionary allows for both baptistry and baptistery. Whatever they are called, we are seeing more non-traditional installations than ever before. Because of the stage design of many churches, a popular installation for a church baptistry is to sink them in the stage and put a removeable cover over the top. The baptistry heater can be remote mounted or side mounted underneath the stage along with a sunken dry area for the minister to stand. The traditional placement of the baptistry behind the choir loft is still popular with many churches, but round, V-shaped and semi-custom baptistries are all gaining in popularity.

We also see more churches decorating the outside walls of the baptistry with non-traditional materials such as stone. Some churches even design a theme around the baptistry (like the river Jordan) and blend it in to the worship space.
